It's Time to Go Mobile

By Gary Klingsheim

What do you carry in your purse or pocket? An Android smartphone? An iPhone? What about a Nook Tablet? An iPad? Or is it some other mobile device that has the ability to access the internet? Mobile devices are everywhere these days. People use them to check not only phone messages, but also email, look at videos, and just casually cruise the internet. It doesn't matter where they are - if they can access the internet, then why not? This also means that you have customers everywhere all the time and nothing is stopping them from making a purchase.

This is precisely why you need to transform your site into one that has a mobile-friendly design. Many sites have still failed to do this, leaving people dissatisfied when they visit and find themselves struggling to navigate a webpage made to be seen on a much larger screen. Oftentimes people will leave if they can't get where they want. Your goal with a mobile site is to make sure that they stay.

Your current website may include everything from pictures to text to entire videos. The site will be designed to fit a laptop screen or traditional desktop monitor size. But mobile devices are much smaller, from just a handful of inches across to the size of a sheet of paper. Transforming your site into a mobile version of itself means removing a lot of the elements you currently have. In essence, a mobile site is the most important parts of your webpage, made to be easily seen, navigated, and accessible. Everything is made smaller on a mobile device, so you may want to take a number of things into consideration, from text size to link proximity.

In terms of what to keep on your site, you will want to hang on to links and other bits of important text that tell people what your site is about. Make product pages easy to find and easy to use. Ensure that links don't go hiding either, because if a person cannot find what he or she wants in a timely manner, they will become frustrated with your site and simply leave for one of your competitors. Design and navigation will go hand in hand with a mobile site. Think for a moment about how you would want a site to look on your mobile device. Visit several other locations on your device to see how they show up and what good ideas and bad ideas are used. This way you'll have a better idea of how to go about making your own site mobile and avoiding any unwanted mistakes.

There are plenty of locations that also give you the chance to see your site in mobile format. This way you can test it before making it available to the rest of the world. Another great idea once you put your mobile site out there is to utilize your current customer base through social media networks. Ask them to see your site and how they feel about it when accessing it on a mobile device. Do they have trouble navigating? Is there anything that won't load? What do they like? Is there anything they dislike? You can use your followers to discover any glitches in your design and adjust things accordingly. They'll be happy to see that not only have you asked them for their opinion, but that you've taken the time to listen to them in order to improve.

When your site is ready, let people know through social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Encourage them to visit your mobile site and tell you what they think. People like to be involved with the companies they shop from, and if they notice problems, you'll get to know right away. Encourage them to provide you with feedback on both what they like and what they dislike. You'll be able to quickly identify great things about your mobile site as well as any issues, and because they are already fans of your business, you aren't likely to lose out on any customers. They'll also help to spread the word about how your business is now mobile, giving you the chance to provide your services to people no matter where they are.
