BBB: How it Works

By Josie Lynn

The Better Business Bureau which is known as BBB is an organization which was formed in 1912. It is a watchful organization which assures about the reliability of the company. There are many profitable or non-profitable companies in market which take money from consumer to provide services. Some of them provide timely services and earn reputation but some crooked companies which are promise to give service but their motivation is take once money and run away. The Better Business Bureau can be defined as watchdog to monitor several business organizations in United States and Canada. This organization helps consumers to take proper decision and support about selecting best company for their investment.

The factors which play important role to increase or decrease BBB rating are - First, complain history about company. This organization at first checks number of complaints about the company and then evaluates them according to seriousness of the complaint. If consumer gets satisfactory respond from company to resolve the complaints in proper time. Whether company gives its best effort to satisfy its customer or failed to fulfill customer expectation. The elements and associated grades which are related to complaint history are Complaint Volume (20 to 2), Unanswered Complaints (20 to (-21)), Unresolved Complaints (10 to 1), Serious Complaints (15 to 0), Complaints Analysis (8 to (-12)), Complaint Resolution Delayed (0 or (-5)), Failure to Address Complaint Pattern (0 or (-5)).

Before having trust, one should know that there are lots of cases are pending against this organization. To make grading system clear and trustworthy parent body of this organization took several steps to restrict unauthorized facilities which were given to the member of this organization. Authority also constructed a complaints structure where any business organizations or consumers who are unsatisfied about the service of this organization can issue complaints against such services but still biased tag is not completely removed from this organization because in 2010 again a Canadian company reported that BBB degrade their rating to D- from A due to rejection of membership subscription.

"Time in Business" (8 to -10) is another factor of evaluation of company's trustworthiness. If company have not proper information about timing of business then BBB request company to give proper information about this matter. Organization checks the reliability of the information and check the company profile. Background Information also carries 5 or 0 grade point. If fails to provide proper background information or not clarify the practice and purpose of business, there is chance to get lower grade.

From 2009, BBB started special grading system to describe company's services. Previously this organization just rates the companies as "unsatisfactory" or "satisfactory" rating. Company's online searching system give consumer a convenient way to find nearest centre and accredited companies.
