The Importance of Data Collection

By Bertie Smith

The process of data collection is a crucial step in all matters relating to market survey, research projects on market analysis etc. As a matter of fact, all subsequent tabulation and data analysis are all based on the inputs from the data so collected. Naturally, the accuracy of the inferences or the analysis remains entirely based on the data so collected. It is for this reason this crucial task is normally entrusted to reputed agencies like the 'data collection Leeds', 'face facts' etc.

There are many methods of data collection like for example interview over telephone, holding face to face interview, online search, preparing questionnaire etc. Whatever be the method of data collection, the agency collecting the data must be fully aware of the purpose for which the data is being collected. This helps the agency to target the source properly. This entire process involves well orchestrated ground work.

Data collection involves time and considerable expenditure as well. The field workers have to be appointed and they have to travel a lot to meet people. They have to interact with the individuals, communicate effectively and then collect the required data. All these depend on the efficiency of the field worker. In some cases, face to face discussions or interviews may have to be held. In such cases the field worker has to make enough preparations so that data can be extracted from the persons.

The process of collecting data through group discussion is considered to be most useful approach. The reason for this is in such discussions the reaction of the participants to a given product or situation can be directly assessed. But, in many such discussions, the meeting would lead to exchange of words leading to discussions taking place outside the agenda. The moderator of the discussion should be shrewd enough to ensure that such situations do not arise and the entire discussion is within the agenda and the discussion takes place in a cordial atmosphere.

The data collected must be tabulated and this tabulated result is analyzed to derive the results or inferences. So, the person tabulating should coordinate with all the field workers and ensure that he has got all the materials required. Then he must also ensure that he enters the data correctly and cross check the entries made. The tabulator must understand that if he commits any mistake in entering the data to the tabulation sheet then it would lead to wrong inferences.

These are very important works which should be entrusted to highly experienced organizations like the data collection Leeds. These agencies would always ensure that their data collection procedure is foolproof. At the same time the agencies finalize the data and wherever necessary they will consult experts in the field and get the procedure they have adopted rechecked by these experts.
