The Growing Popularity Of Steam Punk Books

By Cheri Knowles

When it comes to popular book genres in the marketplace today, few are hotter than steam punk books. These novels have managed to capture the fascination of a new generation of readers, and have become one of the most often-discussed topics among fans of fantasy and science fiction.

To understand this phenomenon, it helps to define the genre. For the most part, these stories take place in worlds similar to this one. There are, however, differences between the fantasy setting and the real world, most notably the fact that technology in those worlds usually revolves around the use of steam.

Moreover, a large portion of these novels take place in a fictitious England, and are set in the Victorian era of the Eighteen-hundreds. That fictitious world is one that almost invariably diverged from real history at one point or another in its past.

As a result, these novels find characters using technology that was not actually designed until the 19th or 20th century. It is not uncommon to find facsimiles of computers, aircraft, and similar technological wonders being used by both protagonists and antagonists alike.

The genre itself contains a multitude of story types. One can find mysteries, zombie tales, knights, heroic adventure, and revised historical epics within this one genre. Almost every type of story line imaginable has been or could be adapted to this unique genre, provided that it adopts the proper setting and level of technology.

Though most experts acknowledge that there were Victorian-era authors utilizing many of these same themes, the ideas have only now taken root as an identifiable genre of its own. And with new novels continually utilizing these themes, steam punk books appear to occupy a genre that will be with us for some time to come.
