Social Media Marketing Tips: How to Address Online Opponents

By Mason Duchatschek

Have you ever watched or experienced "haters" online who have set their sights on causing havoc to your organization's online reputation? If not, then it might be a wise idea to have a plan in advance on how to deal with those unscrupulous or bored people with nothing better to do with their time. Sometimes it will be competitors who attempt to spread bad news or misinformation. Other times it can be jerks who just enjoy to cause trouble.

In any case, if you are trying to build an online presence using new media and social media tools to promote your business or build your authority as a subject matter expert online, then you will need a strategy. Of course you can just erase or wipe out negative comments. You can also set up account profiles to weed out negative comments before they get posted. But, are those the best ways to handle negative remarks or criticism? Perhaps the answer is no.

Some time ago I got to meet Paul Colligan at an online marketing seminar in California. He is extremely well known for his work and vision in the social media marketing and video marketing arena. Then I told him about a company based out of St. Louis, Missouri that offered home drug test kits online called TestMyTeen.com.

It doesn't take a genius to realize that there are plenty of motivated and vocal critics of the idea of home drug testing. Drug users in particular, have proven they want to fill the comment section of social media accounts with disparaging and hateful statements. Paul saw this criticism as an opportunity to be embraced instead of an obstacle to be overcome.

Paul pointed out the value of leaving the pro-drug use comments for all to see on TestMyTeen.com's social media accounts. He argued that parents could see first hand how persuasive, motivated and pervasive the pro-drug culture really was, directly from the people who were actively talking to their kids.

The harder opponents and critics of home drug testing tried to promote their lifestyle, the more they demonstrated the need for the products offered by TestMyTeen.com. Parents could see for themselves how badly drug users wanted to share their experiences with others and how little fear they had of consequences. If parents had any doubts about how accessible drugs were to their teens, what better way to show them than to let them witness it for themselves?

After that discussion with Paul, it became obvious that there are a ton of circumstances when it is a better idea to "love the hate" and resist urges to quiet critics online. It is possible and often profitable to turn adversaries into allies online whenever you have the chance.
